Web-Based Training

"The Internet is fast becoming a vital vehicle for
training.  A wide range of companies are embracing
the convenience and reach of the web to deliver
an equally wide range of technical and business
training."

Primary reasons companies are going this way:

1.  Cost.  It can save up to 30% of training costs.

2.  Support.  Reach the most people with the
     least support staff.

3.  Ease of Monitoring.  The traininig administrator
can track thousands of people online.

4.  Convenience.  At home or away, it's easy to
     accomplish a  module.

Five Lessons for companies to learn:

1.  It's not all information technology.  HR managers,
line managers, and the company's strategic
     thinkers need to be involved.

2.  Let content determine method.  If lessons focus
on generic practices, then maybe it's better to
buy them from a vendor.  If the practices are
proprietary, it's better to host them yourself.

3.  Knowledge is power, so keep it safe.  There are
some things such as marketing training that you
     don't want outside your firewall.

4.  Get people on board.  Management needs to buy
in, and web-based training needs to be
     institutionalized throughout the company.

5.  Keep it fresh.  It must include your most up-to-date
     information.
