Cyber Crime Today

"Law enforcement needs to arm itself to fight the
crime of the new millennium."

The article begins by defining cyber crime, and goes
on to say that the use of computers as a tool of crime,
as the object of a crime, and as the place where the
evidence from crime is stored, is accelerating.

The anonymity of cyber space, and the ability of
anyone to appear to be a huge corporation with
endless assets, makes it easy to convince people of
almost anything and difficult to determine authenticity.

The article describes many kinds of fraud, theft,
illegal information gathering, and stalking.  Many
sharp-edged vignettes emphasize the key points.

The article closes by outlining many of the challenges
that must be overcome.  "Cyber crime will get more
sophisticated as criminals lead law enforcement
toward higher technology.  As more people get online,
crime will grow exponentially."
