Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
How It Affects You

WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (CTS) ?

"CTS derives its name from the narrow channel located
in the wrist called the "Carpal Tunnel".  Through this
tunnel passes numerous tendons, which are responsible
for finger and thumb movements.  Along with these
tendons passes the Median nerve which provides sensation
for the thumb, index and long fingers.

When irritation is introduced to this area, inflammation
occurs, causing compression of the structures passing
through the tunnel.  This eventually leads to the symptoms
listed below."

"WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS ?

o  Pain and tingling in the hands, especially at night.

o  Weakness in the hand, thumb and fingers.

o  Morning stiffness or cramping.

o  Frequent dropping of items.

o  Swelling of the fingers.

o  Burning sensation of the fingers.

o  Wasting of the hand muscles."

"CTS is the most frequent repetitive stress injury
reported, accounting for 60% of all occupational
injuries.  CTS also occurs more often in women than
men, by a ratio of 30 to 1."
