For Leadership
1. Listen and ask questions. People often just need
a sounding board for their ideas.
2. Encourage people to take responsibility for their
own development. If they want training and the
company isn't providing it, encourage them to go
ahead themselves.
3. Be a mentor. Everyone has something in terms of
experience, skills and talents that can be offered
to others.
4. Help people find other mentors. I know one
professional who claims to have more than 20
mentors. She says she simply looks for the best
in each person and calls them when she needs help.
5. Help people determine their life's mission. Each
person has different needs and desires. The best
mentor is one who can help the individual sort out
what others want for him from what he wants for
himself.
6. If you're a manager, work with your employees.
Develop missions that fit their personal visions as
well as the company's long-term vision.
7. And do it all today. You don't have to wait until
you're a senior citizen to engage in this.
Employee
development is crucial to your company's future.
