You've
Been Hacked!
Network systems are increasingly becoming
targets for attacks from malicious individuals.
In 1999 alone, a third of the companies in the
United States saw intruders break into their
systems. The internet is becoming a more
common vehicle for these unwanted attacks.
Telecommuting can be dangerous if an employee
is "always on," especially if a DSL or a cable
connection is used. A personal firewall on the
remote computer is highly suggested, to keep
hackers out of the same corporate network the
employee is utilizing.
Open systems in companies mean that various
departments could be vulnerable, with the Human
Resource department seen as one of the choice
spots to break into. Security is often compromised
by employees who share their passwords with
other co-workers, or who use a password that is
easy to "break," or figure out. The danger here
is that an employee could pose as another
employee, with that individual being completely
unaware of any damage that could be caused in
his or her name. Forged e-mails and memos are
fast becoming common in the workplace.
